ANNA ALBURY

In the “concrete jungle” of New York City, swimming in a cement sea of grey blazers and slick-back buns, Anna Albury is as colorfully vivacious as ever.

The Brooklyn-based rug designer and founder of Substack “Cool Stuff NYC,” discusses details of her next glittery birthday party, the checklist of what makes something “cool” in her book, and of course, the meanings behind her favorite HART pieces.

Welcome to Babes in HART – let’s say we just met at a dinner party. How would you introduce yourself?

Hi I’m Anna! I’m an NYC-based rug designer, interior stylist & co-founder of the coolstuff.nyc newsletter. I live in Park Slope with my husband (the other half of coolstuff.nyc) and our puppy, Margot.

At its core, our jewelry is about personalization — wearing what reflects who you really are and tells your story. That said, what lights you up?

Color! Community! And really good design!

You wear a lot of creative hats—interior stylist, rug designer, newsletter editor. How do those worlds overlap for you?

As my day job, I work as a custom and collections rug designer for a small to-the-trade rug company here in the city, while coolstuff has grown from a “side project” to a second job. Additionally, I work as a freelance virtual interior stylist to help people style their homes. The three really do interact with each other often - whether that means I’m using inspiration I found for a rug design in a graphic idea for coolstuff, or a project for an interior styling client…or that I get inspiration from restaurants and events that I go to for coolstuff that can be transferred over to my rug design work.

It’s all organized chaos and everything we see always circles back. :)

Your style is wonderfully colorful and full of personality. What are you inspired by lately—colors, materials, moods?

Thank you! I love having fun with color in my home and with how I dress everyday. Living in New York where most people wear all black (especially in the winter), I’m sometimes the only person on the street in full color.

I’m currently planning my glittery, cozy birthday cocktail party at home and I’m super inspired by a collection of images I’ve gathered to set the mood. I love looking back to nostalgic design and decorations for parties as I get older - a ceiling filled with multi-colored balloons, walls covered in silver tinsel, and trays of chicken nuggets as one of the appetizers.

You co-founded the newsletter @coolstuff.nyc with your husband, which curates the latest goings-on in NYC. What makes something “cool” in your book?

We get a lot of pitches to coolstuff for things to share, and we always have a checklist to see if we feel good about sharing it in the newsletter:

1. Would we go to the spot (restaurant, pop-up, store etc) ourselves?

2. Is it unique & original?

3. Do we feel aligned on the design?

This helps us make sure we share things that feel true to us!

What do your HART charms and pieces mean to you?

I love the mix of the diamonds on the Bezel Tennis Necklace with the Baroque Pearl Necklace, and my Long Malachite Gemstone Necklace - such a fun mix of bead size and color, but they also still make sense together.

I’ve always been a ~charm girl~ and love that HART has brought my passion for telling a story with charms full circle into adulthood. I’m currently loving the Snail Charm - a reminder to slow down and take things one step at a time. This is super important for me to keep in mind in such a busy season. The Ribbed Vesta Case is also such a special one and feels like a vintage treasure that’s had lives before me. I plan on filling it with a tiny love note from my husband.

We just opened our first NYC store in Nolita (!!). What’s your dream weekend in the city – any secret spots nearby we should know about?

YAY! I’m so excited you all are here. :) You’re on such a good block! Some shops I love right here are Clare V., Sézane, and Buck Mason. For food in the neighborhood: Mommy Pai’s, Gem Home and Lovely Day. Cafe Integral and Park at Kims for coffee!
