LULIE WALLACE

Lulie Wallace has a way of making things feel vibrant—whether it’s through her art, her perspective on motherhood, or her approach to life. A painter and mother of three, she runs her studio out of Columbus, Georgia where she dreams up her work - from whimsical wallpaper patterns and textiles to large canvas pieces.

We chat with Lulie about inspiration, motherhood, the advice she hopes her children carry with them, and the sentimental charms she wears close to her heart.

Lulie Wallace Charm Necklace

Welcome to Babes in HART! Let's say we just met at a dinner party...how would you introduce yourself?

Hey! I’m Lulie! I’ve got three precious girls ages nine, seven, and five that all have about ten nicknames. I’ve been married to my sweet husband for fifteen years and he has been such a balancing force and constant for me! I love my little family very much!

You describe painting as a privilege. What's a studio day like for you?

Painting and my work place (most days) is truly a place I am charged and feel energized to think creatively, whether that is about business or art! It is a true privilege to paint and I see it as a gift that I get to go into my painting space and make art.

You're a mother of three daughters along with being an artist - how has motherhood shaped your work and/or creative process?

I think it’s totally changed my idea of working and work ethic…for the better! Being a mom lets me go home and remember work is JUST work…that there is so much more. I love the balance of both.

Mother's Day is coming up, and we are always in awe of moms doing things in AND out of the playroom. You have three children and a blossoming business. How do you see yourself as more than a mom?

I mean I’m a mama, a wife, a friend, a daughter, a driver, a cook…so many roles and I personally find a lot of peace in my faith that truly keeps me grounded in these areas. Not that I have it figured out…I’m limited, imperfect, have my bad days, lose my patience, but I feel like my faith in Jesus is a huge part that gives me the grace and confidence in these multifaceted areas!

If you could give your children advice as they grow up and look to find their own passions, what would you tell them?

That’s a good and tough one…maybe it’s that you are loved…a complex question with a simple answer that I just hope they know whatever they go out and do, that they are loved!

What advice did your own mother give you? Or, what lessons/ways of living did you learn from your mom?

I feel like my mom had such great confidence…she’s silly, loves a dance floor, pretty much always looks cute without a lot of fuss.  I think she doesn’t take anything too seriously and is always up for an adventure…fly by the seat of your pants kind of woman and is just so cool…she’s the best!

What does 'success' mean to you? How do you define it?

Man, it’s gotta be a balance. I feel like that is weekly if not daily on my mind! If you take it all as business success, then it can all be taken away in a moment. I feel like success for me is making new art that I’m proud of. The creative process is very rewarding for me!

What's the most surprising place you've ever found inspiration?

Junk stores and antique booths! I’m so attracted to art and patterns with age…things that have stood the test of time.

What advice would you give to young artists hoping to turn their passion into a career?

Make art! Even if nobody pays attention! I say I often feel like the yoga instructor of art…I feel like we were made to make things, to be creative whether that's on the canvas, in the kitchen, as a school teacher. I think to become good at art you have to put some major hours into it, but the process of learning is so FUN! I’m still learning.

Talk to us about your HART necklace - what's the meaning behind the charms you chose?

I have a clover - my birthday is St. Patrick's Day, and a Number 3 for my three babes. I have a LOVE charm which reminds me of the verse in Corinthians I learned recently. And I have a super cool lil box that I want to put verses that I’m learning…and then a cross!

THE GOOD STUFF

There's a quote by Monet that says that he thinks of his Lily pad painting like having a window with a view! I LOVE that…like you can have a cool view wherever you live with an amazing piece of art that speaks to you.

Favorite Quote? A Corinthians verse that love is patient, kind, it doesn’t envy, doesn’t boast, it isn’t proud, it isn’t rude, it isn’t not self-seeking, it isn’t easily angered, it keeps no record of wrong (one of my favorite things about love). It doesn’t delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.

Studio playlist or album? Most of the time I’m just chatting with the girls in the studio, but I’ll listen to books and podcasts!

Next dream destination? Hawaii?! Never been!

What's on your nightstand? Stacks of partially read books and water glasses I take two sips out of.

What is in your purse? Very limited! Good chapstick, my keys, my phone, and usually a lot of trash! HA!

Favorite book you read to your kids? My husband is the book reader in our house…it’s one of his cutest qualities! He’s currently reading them Theo of Golden by Allen Levi!

Go-to parenting hack? Leave space in your day to just be with them! Like without the activities!

Go-to cocktail or mocktail? Soda water with bitters and lime! I’m loving a night time mocktail treat at the moment!

Studio/painting outfit/clothing essentials? I have a group Pilates studio across the hall from where I paint that I pop into and so most days i’m painting in Pilates clothes so I can drop my brush and run across the hall when class starts!

Must have makeup product? Tubing mascara!
