TAYLOR LASHLEY

Vogue Social Media Editor by day and New York City sprawler by night, Taylor Lashley is how we imagine Carrie Bradshaw's life might look like if her story took place in the height of the digital age.

As New York Fashion Week is taking the city by storm, we got the inside scoop on what Taylor's days look like working for one of the world's most influential fashion magazines.

Her NYFW survival guide? "A comfortable pair of flats (I currently love my Jamie Haller loafers), a mini fan, my trusted portable charger, a good lip product, and an Uber code (lol). Oh and water, lots of water!"

Read on to find out how she spends her 5-9 after her 9-5, how she defines her style, and what everyone is wearing right now at the Vogue office.

You manage social media for Vogue…can you give us a peak behind the Vogue curtain? What’s a typical work day for you… if there is one?

Every day is different when you work in social media. Between algorithm changes and viral trends to hop on, you never know what the day will bring you. But on a typical day, I’m in the office taking meetings and working alongside my team on strategy and creative concepts for the different accounts we all help run.

What does it take to be successful at your job? (Any career tips?)

I think you have to be motivated, creative, and a tad bit chronically online to be successful in my field.

Social media is such a fast-moving, constantly busy arena that many people find hard to turn off. How do you create a healthy balance with your social media use? Any tips you can share with us?

I think it’s important to set personal boundaries. While it’s crucial to stay in the loop and hop on trends, it’s also okay to put your phone down for a few hours and disconnect.

How do you spend your 5pm-9pm after your 9am-5pm work day? How and where do you unwind?

During a week where I’m feeling social, my 5-9 is all over the place. Activities range from brand events after work to meeting friends for dinner if someone snags a reservation we’ve been eyeing, or saying yes to a spontaneous concert.

On my not-so-social days, my 5-9 goes a little more like: workout class, (Rumble or I’m a recent fan of Tera Pilates), making dinner, and then binge-watching my show of the moment. There’s usually a sweet treat thrown in at some point too, and over the summer my go-to is vanilla soft serve.

How would you describe your personal style and what does fashion mean to you as a tool for self-expression?

I can’t take credit for this phrase because I saw it on TikTok, but I think my style is a mix between "tomboy femme" (I love baggier trousers/jeans styled with a daintier top) and "modern classic." You can never go wrong with jeans, a t-shirt and a good coat when working in fashion.

Can you tell us what editors are wearing at the Vogue office this summer? What’s the vibe/must-have items?

Bermuda shorts, flip-flops, and drop-waist skirts and dresses!

THE GOOD STUFF

Favorite personal mantra?

If you never try, you’ll never know.

What’s on your nightstand?

An assortment of lip products (Summer Friday’s Lip Butter Balm, Laneige Lip Mask, Rhode Peptide lip treatment), Byredo hand cream, Alo Magnesium Reset Spray, my JOTD (jewelry of the day and a glass of water)

Fashion item worth the investment?

A classic handbag, a good pair of comfortable heels, and a well-tailored coat

Favorite brand you’ve discovered recently?

Tae Park! Their pieces are designed and made in New York with limited quantities in each drop. Everything I’ve worn from the brand makes you feel like it was made especially for you which is the best feeling ever. The brand’s founder, Tae, is also a gem!

Two people/accounts you follow in IG for inspiration:

Allison Bornstein (@allisonbornstein6) - She’s a stylist who does an amazing job at breaking down trends and I love that she encourages you to work with what’s in your closet instead of running out to buy the trend of the week

Jordan Risa (@jordanrisa) - Jordan is a content creator with the best eye (for both fashion and for the content she shoots for brands). I love her minimal style and the way she’s turned her page into a love letter to what she’s passionate about.

Favorite Vogue issue or cover?

I think my favorite cover to date is September 2022. Serena William was on the cover and used the story to announce her retirement. It was also the first issue that my name appeared.

Song or album of your summer?

Can I give you three?

  1. Move by Adam Port, Stryv, Keinemusik, Orso & Malachiii
  2. CHIHIRO by Billie Eilish
  3. Tough by Lana Del Rey & Quavo

Go-to bar or cafe in NYC?

Le Dive for cocktails or dinner with friends

Favorite shoe (I know, this is hard)?

This summer I’ve been living in my black Havianas but with fall around the corner I cannot wait to break out my zipped leather boots from The Row

Must-have makeup product?

My Rhode Pocket Blush is always on me these days but my Fenty Invisimatte Setting and Blotting Powder is my holy grail.
