TALIA HUBBLE

If we could imagine a vintage enthusiast meets hospitable host…it would look like NYC-based Talia Hubble and her homewares brand, Maude & May

After stints in LA at Condé Nast and YouTube, Talia followed her love for homewares to New York, blending vintage romance with modern ease. Inspired by her great-great-grandmother (Maude) and her May Day birthday, Maude & May reimagines heirloom-worthy linens with a fresh, effortless twist.

“I love the unpredictability of my life at the moment. It feels like anything can happen and that’s very exciting.”

Read her Babes in HART interview to learn more about the queen of dinner parties, how she gets out of a creative rut, and how she would spend 24 hours in NYC.

Talia in NYC

You started out working in LA at media jobs for big names like Condé Nast and YouTube. Was there a tipping point or specific moment that prompted you to move to NYC and start your own company?

I always wanted to move to New York, but LA was the easiest transition after going to school in Southern California, especially while fostering connections as a freelancer. Once I established my platform and dreamt up Maude and May, I knew New York would be a great place to expand and grow both myself and my brand.

Your personal Instagram and Maude & May’s feel like stepping into a fairy princess meets garden party dreamland. Where do you continue to find inspiration?

That is the kindest compliment ever!!! Thank you. I feel the most inspired while thrifting or vintage shopping. I find old pieces, whether they be table linens, dishware or general home decor, to be captivating and so much fun. When I’m looking for inspiration online, I lean into Pinterest, Substack and, of course, my favorite creatives on Instagram.

Where does the name Maude & May come from?

Maude was my great (great) grandmother, and I was born on the 1st of May, May Day. When I launched the brand, I sold vintage dishes along with the table linens so the name was an ode to old meets new, vintage meets modern. I love the idea of pairing different eras together.

What’s your favorite thing about working for yourself and your brand?

I love the unpredictability of my life at the moment. It feels like anything can happen and that’s very exciting. I find comfort and inspiration in the potentiality of it all! The freedom and flexibility is a huge bonus.

How do you overcome imposter syndrome (if you have it), or when you feel like you’re stuck in a creative rut?

I hate to even admit it but it’s a constant battle. I wake up everyday and pray I’ll have a god complex. Kidding, mostly. I try to remember the young, small version of myself who would be so excited by my life and think of how she’d want me to enjoy it rather than waste time questioning it. Creatively, when I’m in a rut, I try to take a step back from my phone and find inspiration in physical spaces. Whether that’s thrifting, seeking out new boutiques, exploring a new town, etc.

How do you incorporate self-care into your daily routine?

A morning routine changed my life. Having a routine in the morning set the tone for each day which changed the tone for my life. Waking up early, meditating (cheesy, I know but I need it), journaling and moving my body is my recipe for success. It can vary for each person but I think creating some time and space to be in your own head in the morning is the greatest form of self-care and subtly life-changing.

You specialize in tableware – adorable linens,  coasters, etc. If you were to host your dream dinner party of 5 – how would you decorate it and who would you invite?

Oh my gosh this is such a fun question. I love a lush, green setting so I’m picturing a dense garden of wildflowers with a mowed patch of grass in the center for the table and chairs. Several trees, string lights and tons of candles on the table. Everyone gets a Maude and May placemat, of course. I think I’m inviting Greta Gerwig, Nancy Meyers, Taylor Swift, Jeremiah Brent and Martha Stewart. And everyone can bring a friend so they’re comfortable! More is more.

Twenty-four hours in NYC…what are you up to?

I’m having breakfast at Buvette or Salt’s Cure, popping into The Whitney, walking through Washington Square Park, shopping on Bleecker, Elizabeth St. and/or Soho (McNally Jackson for coffee table books). I’ll probably need a power nap and some phone time before a cozy early dinner at Pastis and some jazz & cocktails at Smalls or Bemelmans Bar

Any exciting plans in the pipeline for Maude & May and/or yourself? Where do you hope the company goes?

A Poppy Pouch restock (finally) coming on May 1st! We’ll also have a few for sale (early) at HART on April 12th… stay tuned. Right now I’m just excited for warmer weather and spring/summer dinner parties. In the future, I’d love to have all sorts of Maude and May home decor and even some wearables….!

THE GOOD STUFF

Talk to us about the meaning behind a few of the charms you chose for your necklace!

I’m obsessed with this HART necklace. The heart feels so signature to your brand and I loved pairing it with these colorful charms. They both have a French touch (literally French on the back!) and the pink, red and blue very much go with my closet. I love that I can wear it reversibly for a total gold look as well. Just obsessed!
