P.S. I HART This: Folly Beach

I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Folly Beach - the funky, friendly, free-spirited beach town in Charleston. Here are my favorite spots on the island.

Hart Surfing

Bert’s Market - I usually just grab surf wax, gatorade and boiled peanuts at this legendary 24-hour bodega that proudly “serves freaks, stoners… and regular folks.” But they also have a full-service deli for your next beach picnic.

Chico Feo - Chico Feo is a super chill outdoor spot with live music, cheap beer and tacos. My husband and I like to go here for a lowkey dinner after surfing. No shoes necessary.

Surfing - I like to surf in a more mellow zone between 3rd Street West and 5th Street west. It’s not as crowded as the Washout, which is a fun place to go to watch surfers who are a lot better than I am. Speaking of being a rookie surfer, I highly recommend Isla Surf School for lessons.

County Park - at the very southern tip of the island is the family-friendly, clean and well-run County Park. You can rent an umbrella and chairs, and rest a little easier knowing that lifeguards have extra eyeballs on your kids, too. Convenient parking. And lots of showers to rinse off sandy baby bums and toes. It’s not a secret - it fills up by the late morning.

Lowlife Bar - Located just off the main drag, it’s the perfect little dive bar with live music.
